The Inside Scoop

Seven weeks in the house and things are really starting to feel more settled.  We still can’t use our shower (our builder has said he would come up and take a look, but we aren’t holding our breath given their past history), but being able to come home in the evenings and actually relax and cook dinner makes things feel more normal.

But the extraordinary parts of tiny living aren’t lost.  I can clean, I mean deep clean, in 10-20 minutes.  It’s fantastic!  Decisions just feel easier to make because I have less options (truly with clothing this is a good thing).  And although we still have a lot of projects until we are exactly where we want to be with the house, I am so happy with where we are and where we are going: Continue reading

We’ve Got Mail! But Not a House.

Remember last week when I wrote in hopes that my next post would be from the tiny house?  If you know me or have read this blog you shouldn’t be surprised by this (we weren’t), but Chase and James postponed our house delivery yet again….

First it was that it wouldn’t be quite ready to go by Friday night so they would bring it Saturday.  Next, the weather was calling for rain on Saturday.  Not ideal driving conditions to tow a house, I get that.  But it turns out the forecast changes so that there was actually no rain on Saturday.  We texted Saturday morning with the updated forecast and only heard crickets until it was late afternoon and “too late” to bring the house. Countdown to Move In!

Jared and I ventured down to Austin on Sunday to walk through the house and chat with Chase and James about finishing touches!

2015-10-10-22-47-16That’s right- we are getting close to completion.  They said 2 to 3 weeks which would put us in the October 31/November 1 weekend area and would be perfect timing for several reasons:

  • Most of our weekends from here until Thanksgiving are booked with work travel for me, volleyball commitments for Jared, or wedding travel for college friends- Halloween weekend is a rare open space in our calendar.
  • We need to have the house for our November 14-16 reality TV show shoot.
  • Jared’s parents, who have graciously given us a home for the last year, just put their house on the market…the clock is ticking!

Fashion Friday:Digital Closets and Capsule Wardrobes

Back in February I made my first post on moving toward a minimal wardrobe for the tiny house.  With (hopefully!) a month to go until we make the move to our tiny house, I thought it might be time to take stock of my progress.

I have done a lot of research into capsule wardrobes and other useful wardrobe minimizing tools in the past few months. And I have done a lot of purging making dozens of trip to Clothes Mentor and probably making hundreds of dollars on my discards.  In fact, the gradual downsizing of my wardrobe has been one of the more difficulty and continual efforts of the whole process- which is why I have decided to dedicate a series to that effort: Fashion Fridays. Knotty Piiiine!

knotty-pine-covenWell, yes Fiona, that’s exactly what it is. Jared and I may have enjoyed the season 3 finale of American Horror Story, Coven a bit more than the average person; Fiona’s concept of hell is exactly what we are going for on the interior of our tiny house!

I know it’s only been a few days since my last post, but since the interior photo I shared with you was actually a few weeks old, the new photos that James sent us this weekend show a lot of progress.  Although, I was slightly disappointed to find that our goal date to pick up the house- Columbus Day- is a little ambitious.

Our October and November calendars are chock full of work travel, weddings, and baby showers so Columbus day weekend was looking promising. Especially because we need to have our house by November 14 when we are tentatively scheduled to start filming the Tiny House show.

Alas, I already knew firm deadlines are not a part of the Tiny House world.  Years ago that may have driven me crazy, but it’s all part of the journey and these photos got me giddy enough that I was definitely able to shake off the pushed back finish date:

It’s What’s on the Inside that Counts…

Friends and colleagues keep asking “are you in your tiny house, yet?”  When Jared and I started this process we were initially shooting for a summer 2015 move in.  Of course, the process of finding a builder, designing our house, and finding another builder (see earlier posts) set us a back a bit.  So when most people asked we would tell them Fall 2015 or more specifically September/October-ish for our estimated move in.
